In May, the nation commemorates a sacred day whose beginning goes back to just after the end of the Civil War when Major General John A. Logan, head of an organization of Union veterans known as the Grand Army of the Republic, asked the men in the organization and the nation to place flowers on the graves of the war dead on May 30, 1868. Thus began Decoration Day and the tradition of honoring our war dead. At the end of WWI, the ceremony expanded to honor those who had died in all American wars.
